Why do so many children never receive swimming lessons?

According to a new survey, cost and lack of time are the reasons why parents do not enroll their children in swimming lessons.

“Swimming is one of the most important life-saving skills that children and adults should master. Whether it’s for fun or exercise, swimming will serve them for the rest of their lives and it’s never too early. to start learning, ”said Dr. Matthew Davis, president of medicine at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago.

A recent survey of more than 1,500 Chicago parents found that 46% of their children never had swimming lessons.

The three main reasons were cost (35%), insufficient time (22%) and inability to find lessons (21%). Other parents said they taught their children to swim or did not send them to classes because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although 70% of white parents said their children received lessons, rates were 63% among Asian and other parents, and 45% among black and Hispanic parents, the results showed. .

According to co-author of the study, Dr. Michelle Macy, “water safety skills are essential, especially for young blacks who drown at five times the rate of young white people.” Macy is an emergency physician and community science director. and results at the hospital’s Stanley Manne Children’s Research Institute.

“A lot of people can’t wait to start swimming again, and we look forward to it all will take steps by combining supervision with education to make their children safer in the water, ”Macy said in a hospital press release.

The survey also showed that only 38% of children from families living below the ($ 26,500 for a family of four) were able to float on their backs for 30 seconds without help, compared to 51% of middle-income households and 64% of high-income households. Floating without help is a key survival skill that can reduce the risk of drowning.

The results suggest that low household incomes are a barrier to children’s water safety, according to the study’s authors.

More than a third of parents would allow the child to be in the residential or hotel pool without supervision
