A well-known pill has been linked to the relief of the ramps of the period. Why didn’t anyone tell the women?
Periods are deeply understood. Surrounded by myths and taboos, they vary widely from person to person, with different periods of time, intensity of ramps, and reactions. This misinformation results in many problems for women of all ages, from having very painful periods to being very ignorant of what is going on in their own body.
A very famous pill would have been able to tackle some of the strongest period ramps, but this knowledge was never pursued by drug manufacturers.
Popular Science reports that Sildenafil, commonly known as Viagra, was introduced to the market in the late 1990s. Interestingly, the main effects of the drug were discovered by accident. The original drug trials were designed to treat conditions such as hypertension and angina, also known as chest pain. Viagra affects the whole body, affecting erections, which evolved into the birth of a billion-dollar industry.

A more recent drug trial pursued some of the original effects of Viagra on women. Published in 2015 and led by Penn University researchers, the researchers examined 25 participating women and divided them into two groups: one received Viagra and the other received a placebo. According to the results of the study, patients who received Viagra experienced massive relief from the cramps of the period in four hours.
While these results are incredible, it is important to note that the medication was received vaginally, which could have minimized side effects and increased the effectiveness of the medication. The study was also conducted with a small number of test subjects, meaning that these results may not translate into any type of period.
Menstruation and uteri in general, they remain deeply misunderstood. Conditions such as endometriosis are often misdiagnosed and severe recurrent cramps that cause women to pass, vomit, or go to bed all day are considered intolerable. Surprisingly, Viagra, such a popular and widespread drug, is rarely related to the effects it provides to women. Apparently, erections make more money.
