Eugenia Ye-Yeo has a degree in business from RMIT University and had worked for two years at a local bank before venturing into starting her own business.

The government talked a lot (about) about the potential of the silver tsunami and because of my own experience of not being able to find a gift I was proud of for my grandmother’s birthday, it sparked the idea of ​​starting a business that bring in these products for seniors, ”Eugenia said.

Subsequently, the startup created its own brand of so-called walking canes Dog art to cater to the Asian size of walking sticks. These designer walking sticks are foldable, small enough to fit in your handbags.

The business, which she runs alongside her husband, is still in place today and they have since built a constant tracking and referral system.

However, his biggest focus now is on his other idea, Emergency park, which is experiencing much greater demand.

He did not have the time and patience to paint his nails

Nodspark is their own brand of nail wrap. As for the business idea, the 34-year-old simply said it was “a moment of serendipity” when she came across nail wraps.

She was first introduced to nail wraps when she attended a fair and really liked the idea.

“I like to paint my nails, but at that time, as my little daughter’s second mother, I didn’t have the time or patience to paint my nails, let alone go to a nail salon. “, he said.

He saw the potential of the product and thought it would fit perfectly with our hectic society, so he started Nodspark in 2017.

“Nodspark is a solution to getting beautiful nails without all the hassle of stained or cracked nails, or to having to spend extra time waiting for the nails to dry, let alone even more time to get nails.”

One of the consistent messages the brand always promotes is that beauty does not need a high cost of your time or money.

This appeals to time-hungry clients, such as busy women wearing various hats, working professionals, or someone who just wants to look good without wasting two hours sitting in the salon.

No one really knew what nail polishes were at first

Eugenia declined to reveal how much she has invested in the business so far, but shared that it took six months to balance.

Despite the seemingly good numbers, he shared that the initial release was not very bright.

He cited lack of experience in marketing beauty products and lack of education about nail wraps as major contributing factors.

“Since almost no one knew what nail stickers were, it was very difficult for us to educate customers about nail wrappers and how they work. For some customers who have used them and had a bad experience, we have taken the time to re-educate them and convince them to try Nodspark ”.

Over time, he also learned to build a customer base from scratch.

Beyond the marketing challenge of the early days, they also faced stiff competition that mimicked their product and brand.

“We had a lot of lookalikes that duplicated our packaging, website navigation and even key brand writing indicators. But I think it is important to know your ability, that you are the origin and that you can do much more ”.

“I continued to move forward with the brand’s offers, adding value to the brand with more exclusive collaborations, redoing our packaging to make it unique by turning it into a packaging that you can transform into a box to reuse (instead of throwing it away) as a drawer insert, among many others. “

Covid-19, on the other hand, served as a double-edged sword. Due to the pandemic, they were unable to hold their usual pop-up events, which are an important part of their business.

“Therefore, this means a loss of income flows, along with our traders as well. International orders also took much longer to reach certain countries, so there were a lot of adjustments to be made.”

“But while it affected us in some way, there are other doors of opportunity. We discovered an overseas distributor in Dubai to transport our products exclusively to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. ”

There were also more people who bought Nodspark to send to their friends as care packages.

In addition, due to the closure of salons during the closing period, people also began to discover alternative methods for nail care and it became nail polish.

Collaborations with OBEY, Bvlgari, Disney

Staying true to its slogan to be your nail cabinet, Nodspark offers a wide variety of designs that users can use as long as, for only 15 S $ per package.

“For those who like to experiment with different styles, this is a low-commitment option and doesn’t damage your nails the way jealous people do,” Eugenia said.

The startup has a team of designers working on the various designs of the nail wrap. He also works with collaborators and corporate partners to lend them their original drawings and designs to apply to Nodspark nail polishes.

Some notable collaborations are with Kat Von D Vegan Beauty, OBEY, Bvlgari and, more recently, Disney.

“Our collaboration with Disney is very special, as our designs are only exclusive to the Singapore and Malaysian market. And because Disney was such a huge brand with so many amazing characters that we grew up, it struck a deal with a lot of customers and it was such a huge success. ”

Some of the Disney designs they offer include Mickey Classic, Vintage, Princess Collection and Frozen, and there will be new drops to be released in October and November this year.

When asked what the turning point was that helped drive Nodspark’s growth, Eugenia said networking was definitely helping to open many doors of business opportunities.

“While there were initially a lot of rejections, there were an equal number of people who were impressed by (our) product and could connect to the Nodspark brand,” he said.

He then added that it was a “complete ecosystem” that helped support its growth: from identifying its target market, to building pillars for its brand, to having leaders of its own. strong key opinion who use and love their products, to the point of collaborating with established or creative brands. .

This is what keeps the brand “alive, relevant and exciting”.

But the most important factor of all is having a strong team. “Your big plans can’t be executed if the core isn’t strong,” he added.

With all the challenges that have been launched so far, he considered that the Nodspark team came out stronger than before, as they did not let him hinder his spirit, his growth or his creativity.

Sharing future business plans, Eugenia said she wants to reach a more overseas market as part of her expansion plans.

“We are also expanding our product line, so we are very excited for the rest of the year and early next year.”

Ultimately, Nodspark wants to celebrate everyday beauty and believes that looking together shouldn’t be a stressful affair, so she wants to help make it easier with her nail wrap options.

“Do what is most comfortable and makes the most sense, but be consistent and as honest as you can. Everything else will fall into place as it rushes. ”
