Your heart health is influenced by a variety of behaviors. A recent study shows that common behavior can increase the risk of developing heart disease.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, causing approximately 1 in 4 deaths. The term refers to various heart-affecting diseases, which can be influenced by a variety of things, from the amount of work you do, to the number of chips you eat weekly. This habit, which we may be guilty of doing depending on our professions, could also increase your chances of developing heart disease.

In accordance with a 2018 studyspending much of the day standing up can double your risk of heart disease. We can’t win any of them, because sitting too much is also detrimental to our heart health.

The study, published in American Journal of Epidemiology, analyzed more than 7,000 people over a 12-year period. These people worked at least 15 hours a week and had no heart disease at the start of the study. The results showed that participants who worked with jobs that forced them to stand were twice as likely to report heart disease as others who sat for the duration of their work.

Although we tend to associate standing with movement and other positive things, the researchers explained that standing for extended periods of time causes blood to clump in our legs. This can create pressure in the veins, increasing the risk of heart disease over time.

Surprisingly, in the long run, staying upright for long periods of time is comparable to being obese and consuming nicotine daily. “Occupations that primarily consist of standing represent a significant but often ignored cardiovascular risk factor,” the researchers explained.

It seems that when it comes to our well-being, it is important to lead a life with as much balance as possible.
