The study suggests that tai chi may reflect the healthy benefits of conventional exercise

A new study shows that tai chi reflects the beneficial effects of conventional exercise in reducing waist circumference in middle-aged and older adults with central obesity. The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong; Chinese Academy of Sciences; and UCLA.

Central obesity is an important manifestation of metabolic syndrome, broadly defined as a group of cardiometabolic risk factors, including central obesity, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and , which increase the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

543 participants were randomly assigned in a 1: 1: 1 ratio without exercise intervention (n = 181), conventional exercise consisting of aerobic exercise and strength training (EX group) (n = 181) and a tai chi group (TC group) (n = 181). The interventions lasted 12 weeks.

The main result was the waist circumference. The secondary results were ; body mass index; high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides, and fasting plasma glucose levels.

The findings suggest that tai chi is an effective approach to treating central obesity. This study is of great translational importance because our results support the notion of incorporating tai chi into global patterns of physical activity for middle-aged and with central obesity.

The study is published in Annals of Internal Medicine.
