So 2021 was supposed to be a better year than 2020. How was it for us? As the global pandemic progresses, whiskey companies have not been discouraged. As with 2020, the difficult weather has inspired many of them to bring us some of their best releases in recent years.

Here we look at 10 of the new whiskeys that have made waves for different reasons this year.

When you think of whiskey, you may not think of North Wales. But something is moving there, and this bottleneck shows great promise. While it’s not its first release, it’s the first to be available to a wider audience and perfectly shows what the distillery is all about.

Young and vibrant with an intriguing blend of barrels used during ripening, this whiskey is designed to get people to taste the liquid. Many new distilleries put a higher price on bottled ones and on the connoisseur launch. Aber Falls is doing the opposite. Budget price and good distribution reflect this. A tasty whiskey and a great bargain.

Benriach Malting Season (first edition)

This highly valued Speyside distillery has always been an innovator in the Scottish single malt category. With three different liqueurs coming from the stills, combined with a multitude of types of barrels from around the world used for ripening, the options are endless.

This new whiskey is a real love job. Made only with malted barley in the distillery, this is a rarity. Only seven distilleries in Scotland they produce any of their own malt and Benriach is the latest to undertake this time-consuming traditional practice. The result: a whiskey with an incredible depth of aroma, flavor and structure.

Cotswolds Bourbon Cask

The Cotswolds distillery has continued to expand its award-winning range of single malts (elaborate a magnificent gin also) this year. This whiskey is the latest to join its basic range and is produced with barley grown in the Cotswolds. The aging has been done in ex-bourbon barrels made of American white oak and these show the spirit in its purest form.

Delicious notes of honey, vanilla and white chocolate are mixed with oatmeal and green apple cookies. It has a barrel strength (59.1% ABV), a filter without refrigeration and a natural color, so it marks many squares for connoisseurs.

Glenmorangie A Winter’s Tale

The well-known single malt distillery in the northern highlands has taken a real hat cookie with this whiskey. This is the second bottling of an annual series and follows last year’s impressive A Tale of Cake. It was inspired by the flavors of a pineapple cake upside down.

This year a whiskey is created to give the feeling of a warm and cozy wool winter sweater and to do so it uses the partial ripening in wine barrels of Marsala of Sicily. In Tale of Winter it is rich, sweet and sumptuous with many warm spices. Grab this limited edition while you can: it’s like a reassuring hug in a glass.

Jameson Black Barrel Proof

This bottling is a high-alcohol version of the popular Black Barrel of the best-selling Irish whiskey brand, so named because it includes whiskeys matured in highly charred “black” barrels. Black Barrel Proof (named after the old alcohol volume test system) is a limited edition, bottled at 50% ABV and includes the same heavily charred barrels in the recipe.

This is a whiskey full of flavor: imagine vanilla, golden syrup and exotic fruits with a strong dusting of woody spices. The increase in alcohol content brings strength, but exaggerates the characteristics to new levels.

Finished in Jura rum barrel

The Jura Hebride Island is not the first place you would associate with the word “tropical.” That said, palm trees are growing there thanks to the Gulf Stream. This whiskey gives a different tropical atmosphere thanks to the finish in Caribbean rum barrels. The marriage between two seemingly very different island cultures works magnificently.

Jura’s characteristic soft peat smoke notes are delicately wrapped around notes of ripe, juicy sweet tropical fruit from those exquisite barrels of rum. This is a sunny and cheerful whiskey that takes you instantly to the hottest days of summer.

Redbreast Pedro Ximenez Final

Irish whiskey is booming and we have seen many new distilleries and brands emerge over the last five years or so. But the renaissance has also helped grow established names and Redbreast has been one of the main beneficiaries. The brand of copper stills has expanded its basic range quickly, with this Pedro Ximenez finish being the latest. A new sub-range has been formed, known as the Iberian Series, to accommodate it.

Pedro Ximenez is a style of sweet sherry dessert and the barrels have added intense notes of raisins, molasses caramel and bitter jam to Redbreast’s fruity, spicy character. A triumph.

Smokehead Twisted Stout

Accompanying a beer with a glass of whiskey has long been a pleasant and traditional pastime. In Scotland it is called ‘hauf an a hauf’, or whiskey hunter in the United States. But rarely have the two collided inside a product. In the last two years, a handful of new whiskeys have been released after they have been aged in old beer kegs, and this is the last one.

Smokehead is a bold peat single malt from an unnamed Islay distillery and this new addition to the basic range has been aged in old barrels. Twisted Stout is rich, smoky and salty with hints of dark chocolate and coffee. Fabulous.

Starward left field

For our penultimate whiskey we go to the southern hemisphere and Australia. Many people do not realize that the Australian whiskey industry has been established and has won awards since the 1980s, mainly in Tasmania. But the last decade has seen an eruption of new artisanal distilleries on the continent, and Melbourne’s Starward is at the forefront.

This single malt combines two of Australia’s best exports: craft whiskey and red wine. Left-Field sees a full ripening in barrels of ex-Cabernet, ex-Pinot Noir and ex-Shiraz from the Barossa and Yarra Valley wine regions. Great net o mixed in a cocktail.

FLU Red rye

Oxford Craft Distillery (or TOAD as it is affectionately known) is one of the true pioneers in growth. English whiskey scene. Red Red Rye is bottled for the distillery’s fourth anniversary and is made from heritage rye strains that had previously been lost in agricultural history. They were harvested in the fall of 2017 in fields just seven miles away and mixed with a small percentage of heritage wheat and barley varieties.

The resulting rye whiskey was matured into an intriguing combination of ex-bourbon barrels, then ex-sherry and finally export barrels. An explosion of super charged flavor.
