Thailand has not always been a progressive place for cannabis politics. However, he has certainly made up for lost time.
It was the first country in its entire region to legalize cannabis for medical use Medicinal cannabis from Thailand model that includes a provision for all households to grow and sell cannabis.
The Thai government is even issuing very low interest loans to aspiring cannabis growers. Given the harshness of the region’s cannabis laws, Thailand’s cannabis policy is especially inspiring.
Legalization of adult use is on the horizon in Thailand. If the government goes its own way, Thailand will have internationally registered local strains.
Unesco recognition
The Thai Department of Traditional and Alternative Medicine has announced plans registering local varieties of cannabis as national heritage items, after which Thailand will seek Unesco recognition.
According to Unesco website, “UNESCO is the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. It seeks to build peace through international cooperation in education, science and culture. “
The Department of Traditional and Alternative Medicine has analyzed 30 dominant strains in the country, recorded the DNA of each strain, and will use the related information to “record geographic indications.”
The movement is timely, with Ministry of Public Health of Thailand indicating in recent weeks that the government plans to pursue “full legalization” in 2022.
Start of a trend?
Obviously, Thailand is not the only region on the planet where particular varieties of cannabis are synonymous with the country itself.
Jamaica is known for its cannabis varieties, as well as South American countries such as Colombia and its famous “Colombian Red” variety.
Mexico, which is also pursuing ambitious plans for the cannabis industry similar to Jamaica and Colombia, is famous for strains such as Acapulco Gold, Michoacan and Oaxacan.
Many regions of the world host world-class cannabis varieties, and although these varieties have spread all over the world, they will always be known where they originated.
