Technology is here and waiting for healthcare to make a move


About 10 years ago, ScienceSoft first entered the healthcare computer market. 1.5 years ago, we stopped to be in healthcare computing and began to advance in it. Today, ScienceSoft’s director of marketing, Val Kireitchik, talks about the past, present and future of all healthcare for the company, and him personally.

Healthcare computing: plans, hopes and expectations

Can you tell us why healthcare computing was chosen as one of the main focuses of ScienceSoft’s business strategy?

For sure! In the end, it was a pragmatic and really marketing decision. The structure of the American economy explicitly advised us to consider health care, which at the time accounted for 17% of GDP. In addition, this is the area with stable growth, where new methodologies, systems and approaches are constantly emerging that create a large market. However, the market is not so easy to penetrate, especially for smaller companies, which is good for us. In addition, we already had relevant experience and projects carried out to show our skills and use them to offer solutions. All of these facts came together and we saw the potential.

What makes us adapt well to customer needs?

The biggest value I see is that we naturally introduce a customer-oriented approach to healthcare, which needs it a lot. I’m not just talking about attitude here but technologies like now Healthcare CRM, patient data analysis, mobile applications for patients and another patient participation components.

We worked hard to conceptually adapt the technology to healthcare requirements and make it work for both patients and providers the way they needed to. Some vendors create the system to perform a particular task and forget about end users who need convenience and intuitive navigation to facilitate their routine instead of completely hampering workflows. We choose the other path, making comfort and customer-oriented mode our top priority.

What is your opinion on health ICT trends for 2017?

Well, the security trend is one of the most predictable and stable, I would say. He stayed and will stay among the hot topics. No doubt. Especially with HHS security enforcement activities, because severe measures are taken to make providers concerned about data breaches.

Overall, I don’t expect any substantial interruptions this year. There are many things I personally would like to see happen, but healthcare can be slow as we progress.

For example, I believe that treating patients as clients is absolutely necessary for healthcare right now, and may prove more useful than any new regulation or reimbursement approach. But this or next year is unlikely to happen. The current industry environment does not encourage suppliers to be more customer-oriented. Even the “free market” mood we might expect from the Trump administration is certainly a sector change.

But first we should look at the provision of care itself as a trend and ask ourselves how technology can help improve it and make it cheaper at the same time. This question should be perceived as an operational goal, not as a dream. In other industries, such as the automotive industry, they are constantly answering this question with dramatic quality improvement along with cost reduction.

Interestingly, we already have the technology to achieve balance in care and costs. Telehealth in the form of patient portals and healthcare applications is an example, because it makes healthcare cheaper and more accessible.

We need Take advantage of telehealth to treat patients without serious illnesses or conditions that require constant professional care, such as patients with chronic illnesses, lifestyle conditions, and common colds. Of course, personal visits to the office will continue to be necessary for interventions and procedures, but most routine, for example, monitoring the progress of treatment, can and should be automated.

If the market and regulations motivate big players to invest in telehealth solutions across the country, it would only take 3 to 5 years to change the industry dramatically in that direction. All the tech components are here and waiting, and a company like ScienceSoft can offer a large-scale vendor-driven solution in about a year.

A little mHealth. Do you have a favorite patient app?

No, and the reason is that I think almost everything we have now is just toys. There should be a provider on the other side. We must not try to replace healthcare with ICTs, we must support them.

Otherwise, these applications undermine the idea of ​​using technology for care. When patients want to use the technology for their health, they install something that does not have the support of providers, so it is practically out of the reach of authorized healthcare technologies. But providers cannot offer the alternative, so patients have to settle for what they can install. As a result, everyone is beginning to think that this is how technology works in healthcare. This is a double mistake.

Please name the three distinctive ScienceSoft projects in healthcare IT and say why they are your choice.

The first is the allergy portal for primary care physicians. The portal allows PCPs to comfortably manage their allergic patients, request allergy treatments, process claims and invoices. For me, this project is a hallmark because it is a sign of the emerging collaboration of providers in the elements of care delivery.

The second project is our system for automation of cancer treatment and TPN manufacturing. The solution allows to cover generic and non-generic short-lived chemotherapy drugs and TPN production, stock control, customer information and financial transactions (direct sales). I chose the project because we addressed the challenge of creating a direct channel between patients and providers to ensure that short-term cancer treatment reaches the patient on time.

The third, I suppose, is the health surveillance module in our assisted living solution. It allows you to track the health status of patients by aggregating vital results and tests, as well as automated alerts to notify staff about negative changes. It empowers providers with remote patient tracking and allows them to help patients on time.

So closely connected to healthcare now, maybe you have some tips on healthy living to share?

Yes, I have the only tip. Monitor your health. This is the simplest and most difficult thing I can think of, because we don’t all like doctors and hospitals, so we try to avoid them as long as possible. But it’s still better to keep than to fix, so just try to be preventative.

We talked about how ScienceSoft started its healthcare computing crusade. What about our plans to continue?

We will go more in the direction we would like to see healthcare, and we will respond to market demands. I’m talking about customer-oriented solutions, specifically medical CRM, mobile apps, image analytics, data analytics, and augmented reality. We also plan to cooperate with clinical researchers in image analysis and research data analysis.

And the last question. How do you rate your lifestyle on the scale of 0 to 10?

Oh, now that’s bad. Why would you ask? Okay, let’s count. In my opinion, lifestyle consists of 4 main components: physical activity, sleep, nutrition and mood. I would give it a 4 for physical activity, this is the area where I need changes right now! I think I don’t get enough sleep, so 5. The components of nutrition and mood make me 8s proud. The worst mistake of my career was …

So big that I will remember it until my last day. I started an internal startup at the computer consulting and software development company. It was a product to allow our customers to create any system for their needs (such as CRM, HRMS, billing, etc.) without having to encode it. And it failed because we didn’t invest enough effort in marketing research. The reason was that I was more dedicated to active sales than marketing at the time.

I believe that with moderate efforts made in proper market analysis, we could be successful. We would reduce our ambitions to a particular niche instead of trying to cover the entire market.

For the good part, it was a kick that made me a “marketing believer”. I still listen to my intuition, but now I work with facts and confidence numbers better than the gut feeling.

My biggest dream is …

… actually pretty mundane. I want to be happy, that means an alliance of health and love. Such a simple formula, but when I made it my goal, my life had changed.

What is your favorite book of all time?

You know, I’m not sure I have THE book. But I can name Steven Pressfield The war of art and that of Stephen Covey 7 habits of highly effective people among my best options.

What is your favorite chocolate flavor?

Dark chocolate with almonds and raisins. I also like chocolate with orange peel.

Are you a dog or a cat?

Ah, neither. I am a person of people. Of course, people also need food and attention, but they have one big advantage: you can talk to them.

We get weird here. If you were a kitchen utensil, would you be a knife, a spoon, or a fork?

Okay, my first pick was a knife. All the boys, big and small, are a little crazy about knives. But, after thinking a bit, I prefer to be a spoon, because it’s universal: with it you can eat anything. It’s also symbolic, because you can take something with you and deliver the contents, instead of destroying things around you like knives do.
