Dublin’s Tallaght University Hospital has deployed CliniSys’ integrated clinical environment (ICE) for its pathology systems.
The implementation of the ICE integrates the ordering and notification of tests with the electronic patient record (EPR) in order to provide a single source of patient information for staff.
Updating your order communications and outcome reports will mean that physicians will be able to request lab and non-lab area tests electronically and receive the results along with patient information.
In addition, efficiency and safety for doctors and patients will be improved, as phlebotomists will be able to order tests and collect blood from a patient’s bed. The hospital currently has a fleet of 100 mobile workstations that can be moved around the hospital to help phlebotomists with blood sampling. Scanners will also allow them to link blood samples to patients’ wristbands, further improving the safety and security of testing.
The director of clinical information at Tallaght University Hospital, Dr. Jason Carty, said: “Our staff loves using ICE and the success of the project is a testament to all the preparations, training and nature. It’s time-saving, reducing duplication and improving results.
“We are all excited to see ICE live, working and succeeding. In the first week of posting with ICE we have gone from about 50% e-orders to 90%, and we are aiming for 100% in one very near future “.
The launch of the ICE was supported by Medical Supply Company (MSC), the partner of CliniSys in Ireland, and CliniSys, which worked together with ICT experts and clinical teams at Tallaght Hospital. .
David Wall, the hospital’s information director, said: “This has been a massive project to deliver and it is a tribute to all those involved that it has been delivered in the context of the pandemic and the challenges of a cyberattack on our healthcare system this year.
“Everyone who has worked at our hospital for the past 18 months has been incredibly busy, but with strong support from MSC and CliniSys, we have achieved a perfect start-up with a system that will support positive and meaningful change.”
MSC Computer Director Noel Campbell added: “Tallaght University Hospital is once again leading the way with this first deployment of ICE in a hospital in Ireland.
“What this project does is put the software in the hands of doctors. It can be launched with a single click from the EPR, which is software that gathers patient information and documents and can be used by ward phlebotomists.
“The integration with the other ICT investments that the hospital is making is an important part of this project, and we are delighted to have been able to play an important role in fulfilling an idea that will bring great benefits to staff and to patients.
Digital Enabled Care is a key part of the hospital’s five-year strategic development of its hospital services, and updating the ICE will be key to that. The strategy is designed to reduce paper reliance and provide your staff with quick and easy access to the information they need about patients.
Recently, CliniSys has also been selected deploy a single laboratory information system (LIMS) in Northern Ireland which includes five trusts, the Blood Transfusion Service and the National Genetics Service in Belfast. The company too launched its WinPath Enterprise LIMS at the National Virus Reference Laboratory (NVRL) in Ireland this year.
