Syrian air defenses have intercepted an Israeli attack on several areas of northwestern Syria, including the port city of Latakia on the Mediterranean coast, state media reported.

The Israeli attack at dawn on Wednesday also affected the city of Hifa, east of Latakia, and Masyaf, in Hama province.

Earlier state media had reported explosions near Latakia, which were heard by residents across the city and its outskirts.

The Israeli army did not comment immediately. The Israeli rarely recognizes individual raids and attacks.

Israel has said its goal is to end Tehran’s military presence in Syria, which according to Western sources has expanded in recent years.
