The recent trend towards veganism has seen restaurants The Juice Superfoods i Super Saigon collaborating with Beyond meat, a Los Angeles company that supplies herbal meat substitutes, to offer “meatless” alternatives to their dishes.

There are also KFC’s Zero Chicken Burger, which came out in early 2021. Although it has a halal certification, the protein alternative was neither vegan nor vegetarian, as it was fried in the same oil as other chicken products anyway.

But other than that, what they point out is that perhaps Malaysians have become more receptive to meatless options, whether they are vegan practitioners or simply enjoy meatless foods and products from time to time.

Take advantage of this trend is VickedBood, which has chosen to position itself as a manufacturer of vegan products, especially in the line of bakery products.

It’s not his first reel

Founded by 3 serial entrepreneurs, Sita, Sheila and Sonia have run their own businesses independently before VickedGood.

Sita, a vegetarian, has been in the F&B industry for 7 years and has her name in 2 cafes in Cameron Highlands. Sheila made an IT professional change to pick up a Cordon Bleu pastry course in early 2011 and opened a bakery in 2014. Meanwhile, Sonia was engaged in the gift industry supplying goods to local corporate companies.

They met for lunch late last year for a shared session, which eventually led to the idea of VickedGood in November 2020. Because Sita and Sheila have served customers who had requested vegan alternatives to their pasta, gave them the confidence to be able to operate. this adventure.

“In fact, there are a lot of places that offer vegan products, but there didn’t seem to be any source for the various vegan products out there. Everything you see, you have to find a different source and for us, we wanted to make it easier people find what they want a roof, ”Sheila elaborated.

“It simply came to our notice then all, but we can do strength in our facilities to meet the growing demand for vegan foods. “

Therefore, VickedGood officially got the wheels of its production plant to turn in March 2021.

Incorporating alternative ingredients

Creating vegan baked goods requires a number of alternative ingredients to make the product absolutely vegetable. While fats like butter can be easily replaced by coconut oil or lard, the team noted that many technical issues affect their process in vegan cooking.

“For example, the content of fats and of humidity are different in the sources of foods of vegetal origin. Therefore, direct substitution of ingredients to “veganize” a particular recipe does not always work. It requires repeated R&D based on the principles of food science, ”they told Vulcan Post.

Whenever possible, the team tries to do everything from scratch, even substituting their ingredients. “For example, many vegan recipes require yogurt as an ingredient, which we have formulated and which we also sell to grocery stores like Qra,” the founders shared.

Currently, the VickedGood website does not have proper descriptions of its products and still displays fake text on certain pages. This is something the team should fix as it grows, because those who stumble upon them may be disabled from shopping when they can’t find better information about the products.

For now, the only way to find the full menu is at the brand Facebook page, which lists a range of vegan cakes, cookies, granola, cakes and various types of bread.

Another coffee would not cut it

The startup’s business model focuses on selling its products in the B2B segment, being a supplier of cafes, grocery stores and the like. But they are not yet closing the consumer market.

“What we’ve done is a bit of a hybrid model: focusing on B2B to reach a larger customer base, with a small element of B2C to serve customers who live nearby and are looking for tasty, healthy, small (or not) sugar deals for them, their families and friends, ”Sheila said.

It’s an approach that should benefit the team, as wholesale for businesses provides a more steady revenue stream for VickedGood, as they would fulfill larger orders at once, rather than smaller orders. a customer.

Sonia also noted that vegan restaurants have been making mushrooms over the years, to their advantage. Some I have sponsored myself are Sala and Veggielicious Thai, both located in PJ. He added: “We realized there was a ‘hole’ in the B2B market. VickedGood decided it was time to take on this challenge and invested in what was needed to make it a reality.”

Just 5 months from the company, VickedGood has stored its vegan yogurts in the supermarket Readand supplies nuts to social enterprises The Spread Project. Their breads are used PB Health’s food packages, which are prepared by ours former interviewee, Chef Dave from D’Vegan Academy, while his granola is sold at a couple of pharmacies.

The founders are currently in discussions with more specialty food stores and pharmacies to collaborate with. They soon hope to expand their supply to East Malaysia, Vietnam, the Maldives and Singapore.

At least in the Malaysian market, veganism has not yet grown enough for there to be a domestic brand for these products. This gives VickedGood a chance to climb and establish itself as such a player.

Vegans may be their main target market for now, but if their R&D can produce vegan food with flavors that non-vegans like, this will open the door to their total addressable market (TAM).
