I might have spent a lot of time outdoors with my kids, but this summer has seemed unusually hot to me.

Not only has it been hot, but the humidity and heat index seems to be competing to see which ones can break most records. While some days I prefer to camp inside (maybe in an ice bath), summer is the time for backyard squirrels, sprinkler race, sliding and sliding, hiking and zip lines … so get out!

This DIY cooling spray feels amazing on the skin on a hot summer day and is my secret weapon for keeping me cool on the outside. Bonus: It only uses 3 ingredients that I almost always have around.

Natural cooling spray for the skin

The idea for this spray arose when taking a break to work again to reapply homemade insect spray and drink a gallon of water. I noticed that the insect spray left a feeling of cooling on the skin and helped make it look not so hot.

Surprised at how refreshing it was, I realized that the natural properties of witch hazel and peppermint essential oil spray created the feeling of cooling.

I decided to do a spray for moments when I wanted to freshen up without the smell of lemongrass candle. The result was this cooling spray that I now have on hand while working in the garden, on the beach or garden barbecues.

I’ve also found that this cooling spray works great for helping to eliminate the “itching” of bug bites and the burning of sunburns.

How to make a DIY anti-itch cooling spray

This spray only uses three natural ingredients that benefit the skin:

  1. Aloe vera Aloe is naturally anti-inflammatory and ideal for the skin. It is moisturizing without being greasy and is perfect for those with normal or slightly oily skin. Rich in nutrients and antioxidants, it is often also used in anti-aging skin products.
  2. Hazelnut witch – Although I was first introduced to the hazelnut witch after the birth of my first child, when they gave me a bowl of round cloths soaked in witch hazel and told me to use them on hemorrhoids (which don’t even it had). Although we didn’t start at the best time, I loved the witch for her benefits in skin care and natural remedies. It is slightly antiseptic, which makes it cool and ideal for the skin. In fact, it is often used to remove excess oil and combat imperfections and blackheads. Its ability to shrink blood vessels and reduce inflammation makes it beneficial for hemorrhoids and also for cooling the body.
  3. Mint essential oil – Most aromatherapists would say that in this small concentration, mint is generally considered safe. It never hurts to consult with an aromatherapist or a qualified doctor before using this or any essential oil during pregnancy or lactation or in young children. Skip it if you have any questions. You can also infuse dried or fresh mint leaves in the witch hazel for a week or so before doing this spray for a less concentrated version. To do this, add 3 tablespoons of dried mint to a glass jar and cover with 1/2 cup of witch hazel. Cover well and stir daily for 1-6 weeks. Strain and use the hazelnut witch.
