Success story: Win a 40-year-old weightlifting battle

Today I would like to share a letter I recently received from an MDA reader. After all these years, I’m still speechless when I receive testimonials like Kelly’s. If I’m totally honest, this one got me a little excited. I hope you find it as stimulating and inspiring as I am!

Good morning Marc,

I am writing today to share my success story with you while expressing my deep gratitude. Your books, interviews, and blogs have helped me achieve something I wasn’t entirely sure was possible: losing 75 pounds during the premenopausal phase of my life. (Sorry if it’s too much information, but I’ve read all of your articles about this stage of women’s lives, so I know you understand why it’s relevant!)

Not only was I facing menopause, but my whole life had been a roller coaster ride. In April I decided to change my eating habits. We were coming out of the COVID pandemic, and I was surprised to find that the weight I had gained would keep me from fitting into my summer wardrobe.

About a decade earlier, he had been on a suspicious paleo diet that had suppurative hydradenitis. I read The Hidden Plague by Tara Grant and adopted the paleo lifestyle for a few months in order to identify the trigger of the food that was causing my gut and therefore my skin condition. . I was successful in my mission and also managed to lose 40 pounds in the process. Although I’ve been able to prevent HS outbreaks ever since, I inevitably regained my weight when I went back to eating processed foods. So, this time, I started searching paleo on Google and found you in my online searches.

I bought your books, I subscribed to your blog, I followed you Facebook. Two meals a day it changed my life because everything you talked about was based on science and made sense. Avoid processed foods, industrial seed oils, etc. along with IF it has completely transformed me, mentally and physically. From April to August I lost 75 pounds from an 18 / 20W size to an 8 size.

Along the way, you were by my side whether you knew it or not. I remember meeting a friend at a Chinese restaurant, and while waiting in the parking lot for her to arrive, I searched Google for “Mark Sisson’s Chinese Food.” I wanted to know what you would ask if it were me. The information I found was very favorable, as the answer is that there are not many great options, but stop stressing it because stress is worse than possible fall.

I congratulated you on your exercise philosophy with exercise. In the 90’s I fell in love with a Kathy Smith cardio workout, so between that and her walking podcasts (JFW), I get train daily. But sometimes I’ll remember your Primal philosophy of lifting some heavy stuff, or doing a quick sprint, walking barefoot, or grabbing my abs while driving, so you’re with me too. I watched your interview with Kathy Smith and was in my glory because I am so grateful to each of you.

Your flexible approach, constant support, encouragement, and science-based facts broken down into simple terms will serve me well for years to come, so I just wanted to say “thank you.” Yes, it took determination and commitment on my part, but you gave me the tools to succeed. For the first time in my life, after a battle with my weight for over 40 years, I say to myself, “I can totally live the rest of my life like this.” As you know, this will be key to maintaining weight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

What I haven’t mentioned yet is the pride I feel because after studying your theories, I’ve become super intuitive. I know what to do, it’s second nature, almost automatic. Once you understand how our bodies functioned from an ancestral point of view, everything becomes very easy. Now I’m in tune with my circadian rhythms, I have a new appreciation for feeling the sun on my skin, I have no problem wondering what kind of oil restaurants use to prepare a meal, I make sure I sleep well every night, etc. I feel good and my quality of life has skyrocketed. Thanks to you, I have the information I need to make the right life choices.

While I don’t share my story about metabolic flexibility with everyone, I hope to be able to inspire other people who may see having to lose 80 pounds as an impossibility or a hill too big to climb. Or, the career-focused mom has to run a home, prepare several meals for the demanding family members, and it seems like she can never put herself first to make positive changes. Or, the premenopausal woman who has tried to get healthy several times, but it never seems to work. You see, I can relate to all these people, it’s her … and I did.

Thanks again for everything you do.

THANK YOU, Kelly! Stories like yours keep me going.
