Staff size, COVID-19 results related to specialized nursing facilities


(HealthDay): In qualified nursing facilities (SNFs), the size of staff, including staff members who are not involved in resident care, is strongly associated with COVID-19 results, according to a study published online July 14 at Health issues.

Brian E. McGarry, Ph.D., of the University of Rochester in New York, and colleagues examined the correlation of a new measure of staff size (number of single employees working daily) and of conventional staff quality measures with COVID-19 results. among U.S. SNFs that had not confirmed COVID-19 cases in June 2020.

SNF samples in the lowest quartile of staff size had 6.2 cases of residents and 0.9 deaths per 100 beds, while people in the highest quartile had 11.9 cases of residents and 2, 1 deaths per 100 beds. The researchers found that even after considering the size of the facilities, there was a strong correlation with the size of the staff, including staff members who did not participate in the care of residents, with the SNV COVID-19 results. Conventional staff quality measures, including direct care ratios between staff and residents and skill combination, did not significantly predict COVID-19 cases or deaths.

“Moving forward, they should encourage policies that promote the use of full-time and more consistent staff, while maintaining sufficient direct caregivers to provide safe and effective care to residents, ”the authors write.
