According to a study published online on May 19, seropositivity of coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) of severe acute respiratory syndrome is not associated with low levels of vitamin D. JAMA network open.
Yonghong Li, Ph.D., and colleagues at Quest Diagnostics in San Juan Capistrano, California, conducted a cohort study involving employees and their spouses who chose to take the immunoglobulin G test ( IgS) of SARS-CoV-2 in August to November 2020 Data from 18,148 individuals with SARS-CoV-2 IgS testing and vitamin D levels from the prepandemic and pandemic periods were included.
The researchers found that 5.0 percent of participants were HIV-positive. SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity was not associated with vitamin D levels below 20 ng / ml before or during the pandemic in models adjusted for age, sex, race / ethnicity, education, body mass index, blood pressure, smoking status and geographical location; nor was there any association for having a vitamin D level below 30 mg / ml before or during the pandemic. In propensity score analyzes, the results were similar. An association of SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity with obesity (odds ratio, 1.26) was associated, with no university studies (odds ratio, 1.40), and Asia, Black, Hispanic, and American Indian or Alaska Native and Hawaiian Native or other Pacific Islander races / ethnicities (probability ratios, 1.46, 2.74, 2.65, 2.01, respectively); inverse associations were seen high blood pressure, smoking and residing in the northeastern and western United States (odds ratios, 0.82, 0.60, 0.75, and 0.54, respectively).
“These results do not support the hypothesis that vitamin D plays a role in susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection,” the authors write.
Quest Diagnostics provided funding for the study.
