Shipments of Tesla Inc. in China they rebounded in May from April, when production was temporarily suspended for maintenance, although analysts note whether a slump in bad publicity will translate into a reduction in demand in the coming months.

The electric car pioneer reported wholesale sales of 33,463 locally manufactured vehicles last month, compared with April 25,845, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association on Tuesday. Of the May figure, 11,527 were exported, compared to 14,174 vehicles shipped overseas, mainly to Europe last month. The number of cars that went to the local market alone in May soared 88% from April.

Wholesale figures do not necessarily directly reflect the level of retail demand for Tesla fields rather than through traditional dealerships. Investors have expressed concern over the retreat of a high-profile protest at the Shanghai car show in mid-April and a wave of clashes that may have aggravated public opinion towards the company-based in California. According to technology news website The Information, customer orders fell by almost half in May from April. Tesla representatives in China declined to comment on the report last week.

APC General Secretary Cui Dongshu said he expects even higher local sales of Tesla vehicles in June.

“Tesla sales are unlikely to be affected by the negative impact in the short term,” Cui said in a briefing. “Model Y sales are expected to be higher than the Model 3, especially in China, where SUVs are more popular than sedans,” he said, referring to Tesla’s entry-level car and its more spacious.

Shares of Tesla on Tuesday reduced an anticipated gain of up to 3% to change 1.2% to $ 612.42 as of 9:53 a.m. in New York.

Having initially enjoyed a dream career in China: gaining significant government support to open a factory near Shanghai, Tesla has attracted unwanted publicity recently. In an incident that quickly went viral on social media, a disgruntled owner climbed to the top of one of the vehicles on Tesla’s screen in April’s car and shouted that his car’s brakes had failed, causing an accident. This was quickly followed by two reprimands from government entities that said the electric vehicle manufacturer should respect Chinese consumers and comply with local laws.

China is key to Musk’s growth ambitions: it is already the world’s largest electric vehicle market, and the government is advocating the industry to help achieve its goal of making the country carbon-neutral by 2060. , customers in China have to wait between one and three weeks to deliver a locally manufactured Tesla.

Last month, one traffic cop died and another was injured in an accident with a Tesla. The car has taken the normal test and the driver should take full responsibility for the accident, the Beijing Daily, which quoted the local police office as saying on Sunday. In another incident, a Tesla crashed into a truck and killed the driver of the electric vehicle, according to a Global Times report.

Although hundreds of people die every day on China’s roads, crashes related to Tesla models are attracting intense public interest, and the images are quickly spreading on social media.

In another setback, some local governments and official institutions are reviewing Tesla’s ownership among their staff, alleging that the cars carry safety risks, Bloomberg reported last month. Electric vehicles from some military complexes and apartment buildings have also been banned due to concerns about data collection by integrated cameras. Tesla has moved to reassure authorities, saying the data collected in China is stored locally.

Overall, shipments of cars, sport utility vehicles and multipurpose vehicles rose 1.1% in May, from a year earlier, to 1.66 million units, according to the data. Compared to last month, total wholesale sales increased 0.8%. Shipments of new energy vehicles, which include plug-in electric and hybrid cars, rose 177% from a year earlier to 185,000 units.

SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Co. sold the vehicles with more new energy last month, followed by BYD Co. and then Tesla in third place. The PCA also adjusted its annual NEV sales forecast to 2.4 million cars on Tuesday, from 2.2 million. He noted that China’s policy to allow families to have three children should benefit the car market, especially in the seven-seater category.
