Russia on Saturday reported 752 deaths from coronavirus, a national record of pandemic-related fatalities over a 24-hour period as the country struggles with a third wave.

Russia has set seven new pandemic highs for deaths from COVID-19 in the past 12 days as it battles a growing outbreak driven by the highly infectious Delta variant and a slow vaccination campaign.

The number of official virus cases in the country exceeded 5.75 million on Saturday, making it the fifth most affected nation in the world, according to an AFP account.

As of Saturday, only 18.9 million of Russia’s population, about 146 million people, had been completely vaccinated, according to the Gogov website, which calculates COVID data from the regions.

In Moscow, the epicenter of Russia’s outbreak, only 1.8 million of the city’s nearly 12 million people had been completely vaccinated even though there have been free classics since December.

Authorities are facing a vaccine-skeptical population, with an independent poll this week showing that 54% of Russians have no plans to get a COVID-19 shot.

However, the pace of vaccination has risen after Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin ordered last month that 60 percent of workers in the service industry should be completely inoculated by mid-term. August, with several Russian regions since following the case.

On Friday, Sobyanin said 3.5 million Muscovites will have received at least the first dose of vaccine by the end of the weekend.

The mayor has also ordered offices in the Russian capital to send home a third of their employees and restaurants that were not vaccinated to allow only vaccinated or infected patrons in the last six months.

The Kremlin, however, has rejected mandatory vaccinations for all population groups, as well as suggestions to re-impose a national shutdown.

With 142,253 deaths from the virus, Russia has the highest official COVID-19 number in Europe, even when authorities have been accused of minimizing the severity of the country’s outbreak.

According to a broader definition of coronavirus-related deaths, the statistics agency Rosstat in late April said Russia has recorded at least 270,000 fatalities.
