Russia reported on Saturday its fifth record of daily deaths from COVID-19 as countries around the world rushed to contain the rapid spread of the highly contagious variant of the Delta.

The variant has spurred a resurgence of the virus that has already killed nearly four million people, forcing many nations to re-impose restrictions well over a year after the pandemic first ravaged the world.

Thousands of soldiers and police took to the streets in Indonesia to enforce a partial shutdown imposed on Saturday, as the country recorded a record 27,913 new cases daily and 493 deaths.

Mosques, restaurants and shopping malls were closed in the capital Jakarta, the main island of Java and Bali after the daily amount quadrupled in less than a month, with the fault of the Delta variant.

The overflowing it capsizes on the brink of collapse as stranded hospitals push patients away, prompting desperate families to look for oxygen tanks to treat the sick and die at home.

“The stricter restrictions came too late,” said Jakarta-based Maya Puspita Sari.

“Before, people who had COVID-19 were unknown, but now it’s also the people closest to me who are infected … The virus is getting very close and it’s terrifying.”

Elsewhere in Southeast Asia, Myanmar ordered two million people in Mandalay’s second city to stay home on Friday as the coup country struggles to contain coronavirus cases.

New measures were also put in place in Portugal, with a night curfew coming into force for almost half of the population, with the aim of curbing the rise in Delta infections.

New waves in Russia, Iran

So far, Russia has ruled out a new shutdown to combat growing Delta cases, even when it recorded 697 more deaths on Saturday, setting a new national record for the fifth day in a row.

The second city of St. Petersburg hosted a Euro 2020 quarter-final between Spain and Switzerland on Friday night, with concern after hundreds of cases were detected among spectators attending games across the continent.

Russia hoped its vaccination campaign would reduce a new wave, but it has met with widespread skepticism and slow deployment, with only 16 percent of the 146 million people captured.

AFP reporters saw hundreds of people waiting at Moscow’s vaccination points on Friday.

“I’ve been queuing for two hours now,” said Svetlana Stepereva, a 21-year-old student in the northeast of the capital.

“I want to get punched and feel safe.”

This week, President Vladimir Putin urged Russians to “listen to the experts” instead of rumors about the virus and vaccines.

Iran, which is battling the deadliest outbreak of coronavirus in the Middle East, has warned it could be hit by a new wave of infections.

“It is feared that we are heading for a fifth wave across the country,” President Hassan Rouhani said at a meeting of the Iranian antivirus force, warning the public to be cautious as “the Delta variant has spread” to the southern provinces.

The delta rises in Africa, Fiji

The Delta variant, first identified in India and currently present in at least 85 countries, has caused outbreaks in places that had previously been able to prevent mainly the ravages of the pandemic.

Fiji, which spent an entire year without registering any cases of community coronavirus until Delta arrived in April, saw its biggest increase in infection on Saturday.

Authorities reported two deaths and warned that more would come, as the virus threatens to overwhelm the South Pacific nation’s health care system.

The worst of the pandemic was also saved in Africa, but the number of infections has risen on the continent for six weeks in a row, driven by the Delta variant.

Deaths increased by 15% in 38 African countries to about 3,000 in the same period.

“The speed and scale of Africa’s third wave is like nothing we’ve seen before,” Matshidiso Moeti, the World Health Organization’s regional director for Africa, said this week.

South Africa, the continent’s hardest-hit country, released a new record 24,000 cases on Friday.

“We’re really … in the eye of the third wave storm,” Deputy Health Minister Joe Phaahla said.

Meanwhile, in Italy, 300 health workers have filed a legal challenge against the requirement to be vaccinated against coronavirus, according to reports .

“This is not a battle of anti-vaxxers, but a democratic battle,” constitutional lawyer Daniele Granara, who helped build the case, told the Giornale di Brescia newspaper.
