Oral contraceptives reduce the risk of ovarian cancer in BRCA carriers

(HealthDay): Use of oral contraceptives is associated with a reduced risk of ovarian cancer BRCA carriers of mutations, according to a study published in the July issue of American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Lieske H. Schrijver, of the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam, and colleagues examined the correlation of various characteristics of oral contraceptive use and ovarian cancer risk between 3,989. BRCA1 and 2,445 BRCA2 mutation carriers.

The researchers found that carriers of mutations who were diagnosed with ovarian cancer had a less frequent use of oral contraceptives (never used: 58.6% BRCA1 and 53.5 percent BRCA2) compared to unaffected operators (88.9 and 80.7 percent, respectively). BRCA1 i BRCA2 carriers who developed ovarian cancer had a mean duration of oral contraceptive use of seven years compared with those of nine and eight years, respectively, in unaffected carriers. In univariate analyzes, longer duration of oral contraceptive use and more recent use were associated with a reduced risk of ovarian cancer for BRCA1 carriers. In multivariate analyzes, the duration of oral contraceptive use was the important protective factor (hazard ratios, 0.67 and 0.37 for five to nine years and ≥10 years, respectively, compared with carriers of oral contraceptives).
