The confirmed death toll rises to nine as they continue to be searched in a partially collapsed 12-story building near Miami.

More bodies have been extracted from the ruins of one 12-storey building partially collapsed near Miami, Florida, as the death toll from the incident rose to at least nine on Sunday and more than 150 people remain unaccounted for.

Emergency crews have been searching for possible survivors since the condo collapsed early Thursday in Surfside, a community near Miami. Expert teams from Israel and Mexico have also joined.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava told reporters Sunday that the death toll had risen to nine, including one victim who died at the hospital.

“We were able to recover four additional bodies in the rubble, as well as additional human remains. To date, one victim died at the hospital and we have recovered eight … victims on the spot, ”he said during a press conference.

“Therefore, today I confirm that the death toll is at nine. We have identified four of the victims and notified the closest relatives. “

While people involved in emergencies continue to examine the rubble, a process that was hampered on Saturday a burning fire among the ruins – Questions continue to revolve around what caused the condominium to collapse.

On Saturday, U.S. media reported that a 2018 engineering report had warned that the building was resting on a concrete slab that had “significant structural damage” and needed to be repaired extensively. The same report also found “abundant cracks and splinters” of columns, beams and concrete walls in the garage.

But it is still unclear what caused the collapse.

Al Jazeera’s Heidi Zhou-Castro told Surfside that six to eight rescue squads are working through the rubble and that hundreds of other workers are waiting. “Of course, there’s a lot of sensitivity here … There’s still hope that there are more survivors buried underneath,” he said.

“We are now past the 80 hours of collapse, so the news here has not been good, although rescue workers are making progress in recovering the bodies.”

Federal Emergency Management Agency officials have joined local and state authorities on the site, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Saturday.

DeSantis added that a “sister building” near the collapsed tower is also being studied because it was built at the same time and with the same design. A voluntary evacuation order has been issued for this other building and one inspector has found no immediate obvious problem.

Fire chief Alan Cominsky told reporters on Sunday that the situation remains “extremely difficult”, but that search and rescue teams are working “non-stop”.

“We’re doing everything we can, looking for everything we can, every hope, to see if we can find a live victim,” Cominsky said, adding that heavier equipment, including cranes, has been incorporated. “We continue, our searches will change throughout,” he said.

Meanwhile, the families and loved ones of the building’s missing residents continue to anxiously await news. Some families of the missing have provided DNA samples to officials, while others have reported narrow escapes.

Police released the names of four victims who were between 54 and 83 years old.

The building’s resident, Erick de Moura, was supposed to be home when the tower collapsed, but his girlfriend convinced him to spend the night at his place less than 2 miles from Miami Beach, probably saving him. life.

“Only for God. For me this is a miracle, “the 40-year-old Brazilian told Reuters.
