After months of closing temporary hospital spaces when the coronavirus pandemic receded, Mexico announced Friday that it will reopen two temporary wards to manage the resurgence of COVID-19 cases.
The Mexican Social Security Institute said the two temporary 30- and 40-bed rooms will be opened in the covered areas of hospital parking lots in the state of Baja California Sur.
Like the Caribbean cost state of Quintana Roo, Baja California Sur is heavily dependent on tourism and both states have seen increases in the number of cases.
Nationwide, coronavirus cases have risen 14% compared to last week, after months of decreases.
Hospital occupancy across the country remains at around 17% of its capacity, but in some states it has risen to worrying levels.
Mexico has recorded more than 232,300 deaths from COVID-19 confirmed by the test, but the government’s own estimates place the actual toll at around 360,000.
Mexico has so far received 51.7 million doses of coronavirus vaccines and administered 42.8 million doses, for its population of 126 million.
