MDEC’s MYWiT program hopes to create 6,000 job opportunities

COVID-19 has perfected our “normal” ways of life, changing the way we spend our money and how we work. It has also affected Malaysia unemployment, which increased to 4.8% in 2020, compared to 3.3% in 2019.

As an active opposite, MyDigitalWorkforce Work in Tech (MYWiT) aims to help both parties in the workforce ecosystem. It will provide jobs and improve unemployed Malaysians while supporting the hiring of employers through salary and training incentives.

The goals of MYWiT

Surina Shukri, CEO of Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) believes that the MYWiT initiative will encourage companies to hire, improve and adequately compensate Malaysia’s workforce, while cushioning the impact of unemployment due to COVID-19.

Ultimately, the initiative will address Malaysia’s digital economy plan (MyDigital) aims to foster a strong digital economy by creating 500,000 jobs for Malaysians in 2025.

Under MYWiT, there are two different programs called Digital services for companies (DBS) i Learning digital technology (DTA). Both programs have their own requirements and offers.

Provide the right skills and job opportunities

Current labor requirements have meant a change in favor of jobs that can be done remotely. If you are a new graduate without the skills or means to work remotely, you are already at a disadvantage.

The DBS program addresses this by guiding new graduates to gain digital knowledge and skills, while being used in relevant fields. You can refer to that link for more information on the features available in DBS.

It is also found that there are retired workers mancat in digital skills in the modern workplace. DTA helps them by revitalizing their current set of skills and helping them rehabilitate to get jobs in sectors such as software development, data science and cybersecurity.

Example: A software developer in the hospitality industry can be hired by a health technology startup to develop medical software.

Requirements for employees

If you are interested in joining MYWiT via DBS or DTA, here are some of the requirements:

  • Unemployed for at least 2 months, or a new graduate student (DBS) Or unemployed or reduced for at least two months (DTA),
  • A citizen of Malaysia,
  • You are not a current / former beneficiary of MYWiT incentives in any company,
  • It is not part of the PenjanaKerjaya 2.0 and Penjana KPT-CAP programs,
  • Not a close family member of a director / shareholder / senior management of a contracting company,
  • Job letter offer issued after the date of online qualification application.

Incentives for future entrepreneurs

As for entrepreneurs joining MYWiT to look for potential talent, here are some of the incentives they will reimburse you through the program.

1. Incentive structure of the DBS program

  • Maximum incentives between 9,900 and 20,600 RM per person, depending on the salary offered (which will be reimbursed accordingly),
  • Salary incentives of 40% of the monthly salary of employees for 6 months (salary range between 2,000 and 6,600 RM),
  • Up to 5,000 RMS for pax training (internal or through a Work and Apprentice course on MDEC) Digital skills training directory).

2. Incentive structure of the DTA program

  • A maximum incentive of RM 15,200 per pax (to be reimbursed accordingly),
  • Salary of 1,200 RM / month for 6 months (minimum salary of 3,000 RM from the fourth month),
  • Up to 8,000 RM for training per pax (must register through a professional refresher course at MDEC) Digital skills training directory).

There are two phases to the application process. Classification (phase 1) and approval (phase 2). After the company submits the application for stage 1, the company has two months to find the candidate for the training. Once a candidate has been selected, the company can submit its application for phase 2.

During the first stage, companies can submit an application at any time. However, for phase 2, the following table indicates the closing dates, as approval will be done in batches.

There are specific criteria for employers who want to subscribe to MYWiT as well.

  • Incorporated in Malaysia,
  • Minimum capital of RM 20,000,
  • Not subject to settlement / settlement order,
  • It’s not a dormant company,
  • It is not a legal body or a statute of the public sector, nor federal, nor legal authority,
  • There are no relationships with any MDEC director, shareholder or employee.

To date, the initiatives introduced by MDEC in the digital jobs and skills segment have affected the lives of two million Malaysians from 2016 to the third quarter of 2020.

MDEC expects this initiative, in line with MyDigital’s goals, to stimulate 300 companies to create them more than 6,000 job opportunities and 1,000 new industry technology professionals.
