The family of the former president and current parliamentary speaker says doctors are “very happy” with his recovery after a life-saving surgery.
Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed is conscious and has no life support after undergoing various surgeries, his family has reported, as police announced two arrests in connection with the blast that critically injured he.
The leader of the Maldives Democratic Party, the current 53-year-old president and current speaker of parliament, was taken to hospital after a bomb exploded as he tried to get into his car after leaving his home in the capital, Male, Thursday evening.

On Friday, doctors said Nasheed had needed surgery for a 16-hour period to remove shrapnel and treat wounds that endangered his head, chest and abdomen.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih described the incident as “an attack on the democracy and economy of the Maldives” and assured a “rapid and thorough investigation”.
Nasheed, who in 2008 became the first democratically elected president in the Maldives, is a outspoken critic of the hard groups in the Sunni Muslim Islands archipelago and has been instrumental in investigating allegations of corruption against opposition leaders. .
