Berlin (dpa) – A second Libyan conference on June 23 in Berlin will have to take further steps towards stabilization the North African country. Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (pictured) and UN Secretary-General António Guterres have invited states and organizations involved in the Berlin process to the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ministry announced. Libya’s transitional union government will also participate in the conference for the first time.

The conference will take stock of the progress made in achieving peace in Libya since the Berlin Libya Conference in early 2020. “The focus will be on preparations for the national elections scheduled for December 24 and the withdrawal. of foreign troops and mercenaries from Libya agreed on the ceasefire, “the ministry said. “Steps to unify Libyan security forces will also be discussed.”

The country had been embroiled in a power struggle between numerous political camps and allied militias, driven by foreign powers, following the fall of its long-term leader Muammar al-Gaddafi in 2011. Extremists took advantage of the chaos. There have been no major battles in about a year, however, and air traffic has also resumed recently. The election of a transitional government led by Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbaiba gives rise to a cautious hope that tensions can be eased. The government will lead Libya in the December national elections.
