A record 600,000 doses of COVID vaccine were administered in Italy on Friday, authorities reported, placing the country in second place in Europe by the number of people completely vaccinated.
“Yesterday was marked by a register the number of injections in 24 hours reached 600,000, while the number of doses administered exceeded 37 million, “the government agency in charge of vaccinations said on Saturday.
“Italy is in second place in Europe in terms of the number of people completely vaccinated, just behind Germany and ahead of France and Spain, “he added.
He said Friday’s record vaccines were in part due to an increase in the number of vaccination centers, which now stood at 2,666 versus 1,500 in early March. About 800 new centers will open in the coming weeks.
According to official government data, 37.06 million doses of vaccine have been administered and 12.7 million people have been vaccinated, or almost 24% of the population over the age of 12.
The pandemic has caused 126,415 lives in Italy, where number of cases and deaths has been steadily falling in recent weeks.
The government has been slowly easing COVID restrictions, relaxing a night curfew and opening indoor dining halls to restaurants and bars.
