Over the years, I have created many natural makeup options. Although I have already shared some of my simple eyes makeup recipes here, this article offers more details on how to make your own natural DIY eye shadow in a variety of shades!

Make your own natural eye shadow

These recipes use herbs, clay and real food ingredients. You can also add a little to get some shine if you want. There are many pigment options, but I stuck to some of the more common ones. If you feel like experimenting, try one of these homemade eye shadows.

Tip: Make sure everything is finely ground.

  • Lilac / blue – freeze-dried blueberry powder
  • Rosa – freeze-dried raspberry powder, hibiscus powder or beet powder.
  • Green – spirulina or moringa powder
  • Orange / yellow – Turmeric powder
  • Brown – cocoa powder
  • White – kaolin clay
  • Pink powder – Pink kaolin clay
  • Light green – French green clay

Not bright

Add a little bit to products like lotion bars and tinted facial moisturizer. The little one looks just as good in the eye shadow. This mineral is it is found naturally in rocks and has a layered structure that captures light and makes it shine. If you don’t have one on hand, it can be easily omitted. The bit doesn’t add color on its own, just a little shine.

Groceries they are another common ingredient in eye shadow products. The ultramarine pigment of natural origin is made with ground lapis lazuli and has been used for thousands of years. Natural overseas can have high levels of lead and other heavy metals due to their nature. Most cosmetics now use synthetic overseas derived from clay and sodium carbonate. Plants aren’t as vibrant as synthetic dyes, but I feel better about having them on my skin.

Why omit the usual eye shadow?

I think by now you know the drill. Conventional beauty care products are full of ingredients that I prefer to avoid. Some of them also do animal testing. The harsh chemicals in some eye shadows can cause irritation, redness, itching, and flaking. According to allergist Purvi Parikh MD, someone can use makeup multiple times or even for years just so it can cause problems.

While it’s easy to get a bright color palette in the beauty aisle, it’s easy enough to make your own!

DIY eye shadow safety

Spices like cinnamon and ginger can smell amazing, but they contain irritating essential oils. You will find cinnamon powder apple and cinnamon muffins with coconut flour and even that pumpkin spice facial mask recipe. But I don’t use cinnamon in my eye shadow!

No matter how hard we try not to, it’s easy to touch our eyes or sweat and make up our eyes inside our eyes. Our eyelids are the thinnest skin on the body with only 0.3-0.8 mm thick and require special care. So while an eye shadow with pumpkin spice may look amazing (and smell!) Amazing, it’s not worth the risk of burning your eyes.

Nor do we add any essential oil or oils to the DIY eye shadow recipe. While the oil makes the powder stick better to the skin, in my experiments it caused the eye shadow to clump together. And not in the right way. The easiest option I’ve found is to first pass a light layer of quick-absorbing carrier oil over the eyelid. Then apply powder eye shadow. This method gives the eye shadow some staying power without getting greasy or lumpy.

I use a lot of essential oils in skin care products like deodorant and lotion, but they are not as good for eye shadow. That coffee under eye cream uses a small amount of lavender essential oil, but does not pass into the eyelid either. Essential oils in the eye can cause burning, redness and general irritation.

What’s in a recipe for natural eye shadows

Like most of my homemade makeup, it’s an art and a science. I often measure my makeup recipes into drops and pinches, but this DIY eye shadow recipe is a little more accurate. Feel free to play with the colors until you get the shade you want.

  • Arrow powder it adds a little slip and acts as a base for the pigments. Most herbal powders alone are a little too light to stand on their own. The arrow root softens things and mixes them up.
  • Mica (as mentioned before) adds a bit of shine, but not much color. Feel free to skip it if you prefer.
  • Clays they are light and powdery and add a bit of soft color. Like the root ball, they help the pigments of the plants mix better.
  • Natural dyes like cocoa powder, turmeric and beets are what make this DIY eye shadow recipe colorful.

DIY natural eye shadow recipe

The simple ingredients combine to create a subtle but beautiful eye shadow palette.

Rations 1 teaspoon of eye shadow (approximately) per shade

Instructions

  • Combine all the ingredients for your desired shade in a small bowl.

  • Cover the container well and shake well to combine. Let the powder settle a little before opening the lid.

  • Apply a small drop of oil on the eyelid and massage. Use a makeup brush to apply eye shadow colors as you wish.

Notes

Shelf life: Approximately 1 year if stored properly.
Storage: Keep away from direct light and heat and avoid using unwashed fingers or dirty makeup brushes. These will contaminate the dust and cause it to spoil more quickly.
