(HealthDay): Hospitalized COVID-19 patients cared for in hospitals with higher case surges have a double risk of mortality greater than patients in hospitals who do not experience high blood pressure, according to a study published online July 6 in Annals of Internal Medicine.
Sameer S. Kadri, MD, of the National Clinic Institutes of Health Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and colleagues evaluated the association between the number of cases of severity-weighted COVID-19 and the risk of mortality from COVID-19 of hospitals. The analysis included hospitalized patients with adult COVID-19 codes admitted from March to August 2020 with discharge provisions until October 2020.
The researchers found that of the 144,116 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in 558 U.S. hospitals, 54.2 percent were admitted to hospitals with the highest growth rate decile and, in general, 17.6 percent of the patients died. Gross mortality from COVID-19 decreased over time in all strata of the increase index, but the risk of death increased between 50 and 75, 75 to 90, 90 to 95, the 95 to 99 and the percentiles> 99 (probability of 1.11, 1.24, 1.42, 1.59 and 2.00, respectively) compared to the unsafe (hospital months. The association between the rate of increase and mortality was visible in all ward patients, the intensive care unit and intubated patients.Despite increased corticosteroid use and more prudent intubation during the growing months, mortality the relationship was stronger between June and August than between March and May. It is estimated that nearly one in four deaths from COVID-19 (23.2 percent) was potentially attributable to hospitals with strains due to an increase in the number of cases.
“Many deaths from COVID-19 can be prevented through prudent organizational interventions in public health and health care that minimize the effect of surges,” the authors write. “Strengthening preventive measures and supporting expanding hospitals will save many lives.”
