Elsie and I have an inner joke about what we call the “pumpkin spice latte effect”. Our theory is that in early September, everyone gets a little nicer / more considerate / happy. We included.

We are sure we are affected by the PSL effect. So of course, making your own PSL syrup at home is a great way to take advantage of this good vibration effect.

I love trying coffee from just about anywhere, but I’m no longer excited about PSL Day at Starbucks! And, I think on a “deeper” level, somehow PSL Day reminds us all that autumn is in full swing. Here in southern Missouri, that means cooler weather, hay rides, hot chocolate, apple picking, pumpkin slicing, hot cider, layered clothes, and (most importantly) the holidays are on their way.

I LOVE how this recipe has turned out. I may have to make this a new tradition every year and create my own effect with pumpkin spice milk. 🙂 Here is my recipe, but feel free to adjust the spices to your liking.

Make your own pumpkin milk syrupPSL Homemade PSL syrup

2 cups water
1 1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup packaged brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon or 4-5 sprigs of cinnamon (I used half cinnamon and half cinnamon)
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves (I go with cloves, because I think they taste really strong)
4 tablespoons full of pumpkin puree

In a saucepan, combine all ingredients. Stir over medium heat until sugar has dissolved. Continue cooking over low / medium heat for another 5-6 minutes (do not let it boil).

How to make milk with pumpkin spices at home!Strain the mixture to fine mesh strainer and store in an airtight container. You can keep the unused syrup in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Be sure to give the syrup a good shake before reusing it.

I have some homemade espresso machine which I received for Christmas last year, so I use it to make latte or homemade Americans. As you can see from my (missing) latte art, I am no barista. But, the syrup is really what makes this drink!

If you don’t have a homemade espresso machine, make some (very) strong coffee and heat some milk in a pot over medium / high heat. When hot, use a blender to incorporate air, creating foam.

Combine coffee, syrup and hot milk. It’s not exactly a latte, but it’s pretty good. 🙂 Enjoy! xo. Emma

    water
  • 1 ½
    cups
    sugar
  • ½
    tax
    Brown sugar
    packed
  • 1
    teaspoon
    cinnamon or 4-5 cinnamon stalks
    I used half cinnamon and half cinnamon sticks
  • ½
    teaspoon
    Nutmeg
  • ½
    teaspoon
    ginger
    land
  • ½
    teaspoon
    ground key
    I go calmly with the cloves, because I think they taste very strong

    pumpkin puree
    Be sure to use puree, not stuffed with pumpkin pie
