Nearly a dozen scented hand sanitizers are sold in Ulta, TJ Maxx and Marshalls stores across the country because they can be contaminated with methanol, a chemical that can be toxic when absorbed into the skin.

Scentsational Soaps & Candles recalled the products after tests found methanol (wood alcohol), benzene and acetaldehyde in some of its products, the company he said in a statement on the FDA website.

Withdrawal implies certain lots of these disinfectants sold in Arizona, California, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia:

  • Hand sanitizer with fresh lemon scent from the Ulta Beauty collection

  • Black and white hand sanitizer Black and White SS Collection Coconut Breeze

  • Black and white hand sanitizer from the SS Eucalyptus & Mint collection in black and white

  • SS black and white collection Lavender & Herbs Black and white hand sanitizer

People who bought the withdrawn products should stop using them and return them for a refund. There are no confirmed reports of anyone getting sick from hand sanitizers, but anyone concerned about a possible reaction should contact their doctor.

Ulta Beauty said it no longer sells disinfectant spray and Steve Morrison of Scentsational Soaps & Candles says the company is doing “everything possible” to carry out the withdrawal and make sure this doesn’t happen again.

Exposure to methanol can be fatal and can cause nausea, headaches, blurred vision, blindness, seizures, and permanent damage to the nervous system, according to the FDA. Last year, the agency warned people to avoid it more than 100 brands of hand sanitizers due to possible methanol contamination.
