The group of economically strong countries on all continents includes the US, China, India, Russia and Germany. The meeting is being prepared for the G20 summit in Rome in late October.
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said before the consultations that he would focus on how to revive the world economy after the pandemic. The G20 had already agreed on principles for greater cooperation in crisis such as the coronavirus pandemic at a digital “World Health Summit” in May. Vaccine manufacturers also pledged to supply the poorest countries with more than a billion doses of coronavirus vaccine by the end of the year.
As the venue for the meeting of foreign ministers, the Italian hosts chose Matera, known for its cave dwellings and very popular with tourists. The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Matera was European Capital of Culture in 2019. The G20 meeting also marks the end of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s week-long trip to Europe. during which he spent two days in Germany. for his inaugural visit.
