French company Carmat announced on Thursday its first artificial heart implant in the United States, as part of a clinical study.

According to the company’s website, the full artificial heart, called Aeson, is now available in Europe.

This “first clinical study based in the United States will be decisive for our development in the largest market in the world “, Stephane Piat, CEO of Carmat said in a statement.

The procedure took place at Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina, Carmat said.

Three other study centers have been set up in the United States and are in the process of selecting candidates for the test.

Ten eligible patients must be recruited for the study approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The Carmat device is designed for people with end-stage heart failure, who can usually only be treated with a heart transplant.
