Isolating and refining cannabinoids is an exact science. There’s thermodynamics and a lot of chemistry involved that frankly fly out of the depths of this writer. To understand the role of precise temperature control in reducing process times, solvent recovery, and improving purity, Cannabis and technology today spoke with Georg Kiefer, CEO of Huber.

His company was a pioneer in the development of closed circuit systems for the creation of concentrates. These systems prevent solvents from being exposed to air, allow them to be reused, and reduce the risk of explosion.

Huber has specialized in high-precision temperature control solutions for more than fifty years.

Cannabis and technology today: What are some of the key challenges facing extractors?

George Kiefer: Long process times, low solvent recovery and product impurities are some of the challenges many extractors face. Stable, accurate temperature control helps to solve these problems and allows to develop precise and repeatable methods.

C&T today: Laboratories and extractors use hot water containers, known as open baths, to allow certain chemical reactions to occur at high temperatures. Huber created Unistats as an alternative to open bathrooms. How are they unique?

GK: We have a saying, no matter where you are in your process, we have a Unistat for that!

Unistats are circulation thermostats without a temperature control bath. A much smaller internal tank replaces the conventional bath and an expansion vessel compensates for volume changes that occur due to thermal changes in externally connected systems.

Therefore, the Unit is hydraulically closed and can be placed under the table without any level issues.

In practice, there are other specific advantages that arise from your result: tangibly shorter heating and cooling times, improved stability and reproducibility of the entire processing chain, more safety for expensive glass reactors and substances which contain, in addition to a convenience. operation.

They are unique, without alternatives, thermodynamically speaking.

C&T Today: Repairing extraction equipment can be expensive and time consuming. How can processors get the most out of their technology?

GK: Make sure your vendors offer a warranty and customer service. Huber offers a standard three-year warranty. This year alone, we have increased it to 4 years in our open and circulating bathrooms purchased after January 1, 2019.

Lots of cannabis companies closed in 2020 and we hoped to alleviate some of the economic burdens that some still face by adding an extra year to these lines that are commonly used in industry.

C&T today: What’s the next big transition for temperature control solutions?

GK: Ecological refrigerants. We offer a large part of our range of products with environmentally friendly refrigerants as standard.

The extractive industry is advancing towards sustainability and this is an area we have always found key to global growth. More than anything, we want to help our partners and customers become entities that shape the world. ⁇
