April 23, 2021: $ 4 sunscreen of Walmart performed well enough to be recommended and named “Best Buy” during that year sunscreen ratings of Consumer reports, which had just been released. It’s Equate Sport Locion SPF 50, a Walmart brand.

In addition, two sunscreen sprays made the recommended list: Hawaiian Tropic Island Sport SPF 30 ($ 9) and Alba Botanica Hawaii Clear Coconut Spray SPF 50 ($ 11). The full ranking report is published in Consumer reports website for members.

Pandemic challenges

Social distancing over the past year it has been more difficult to do sunscreen testing, ”says Trisha Calvo, deputy editor of health and nutrition Consumer reports and report editor.

Calvo says the team tests in the lab and on real people. For tests performed on individuals, participants sit in a tub of water for 40 to 80 minutes, depending on the product’s water resistance statement. They come back the next day, so you can examine your skin to see if it has redness to determine SPF protection.

The SPF, or sun protection factor, measures sun protection sunburn, which is mainly the result of UVB exposure. Products labeled “broad spectrum” protect against both UVA, related to skin aging, and UVB. Consumer reports test UVA and UVB protection products.

This year, five fewer products have been tested than last year’s list of 53. Calvo says he expects to add more products in the coming months.

“We haven’t yet been able to find a mineral-based sunscreen that does it well enough to recommend it,” he says, citing some consumer concerns about chemical sunscreens, which contain ingredients like oxybenzone and avobenzone, among others. others. Chemicals have been found to sink into the skin and bloodstream. The FDA is trying to understand the long-term effects of this absorption. He says absorption is not equal to risk and you should continue to use sunscreen.

While some are concerned about chemical sunscreens, Calvo says the risks of skin damage and skin cancer occurring in the sun are much greater than the risk of chemicals in sunscreens.

“We had two mineral sunscreens that got a good rating,” he says. They are not at the top of the list, but they are considered acceptable for those trying to avoid chemical sunscreens. Mineral sunscreens use ingredients such as Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide that act as physical barriers against the sun’s rays.

They are:

  • Badger Active Natural Mineral Cream SPF 30 ($ 18)
  • California Kids #supersensitive Tinted Lotion SPF 30 Plus ($ 20)

More performers

Among other products to consider, Calvo says:

  • Kiehl SPF 30 Activated Sunscreen Lotion ($ 32)
  • Neutrogena Ultra Pure Facial Lotion SPF 70 ($ 13)
  • La Roche-Posay Anthelios Lotion Spray SPF 60 ($ 25)

Protect children

“We recommend that you do not use sprays for children,” says Calvo. Children are more likely to inhale the sprays. But he knows parents may prefer sprays for convenience. If they use a spray sunscreen for children, the ideal is for parents to spray it on their hands and then rub it on their child’s skin. Or at the very least, parents could have their child close their mouth and eyes and turn their head away when they spray.

Never spray sunscreen on your face, it tells adults and children.

The dermatologist weighs

Michele S. Green, MD, a dermatologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, reviewed the classification. “It’s amazing that there were more aerosols than recommended lotions,” he says. In his opinion, “spray sunscreens are usually less effective, which means that the skin is more likely to be damaged by the sun’s UV rays. This means that there is a greater risk of solar damage and the potential development of skin cancers “.

Emphasize that it is crucial to put on sunscreen with spray and lotion in the right way. She recommends an oz of sunscreen applied to exposed skin for adults. With sprays, she says, it can be hard to know how much has been applied.

When choosing a sunscreen for children, I suggest finding a water-resistant one with broad-spectrum coverage with an SPF of 30 or more.

Sun protection Plus

Calvo reminds consumers to consider sunscreens as a single step of sun protection. He urges people to wear hats and cover themselves in the sun.

“No sunscreen blocks all the sun’s rays,” he says.
