The clinical research process is expected to be digitized to make it “faster and cheaper,” according to the government’s £ 64 million plans to bolster health research.

The government today unveiled the first phase of its life-saving and improvement: the future of UK clinical research, initially published in March, to improve patient outcomes through better research.

Part of that includes digitizing the clinical research process to make it “faster and cheaper to start creating a holistic data search, recruitment and tracking service,” according to a statement from the Department of Health. and Social Care.

This will allow researchers to “find patients digitally, offer them trial sites, and monitor health outcomes as part of the study, making the setup and delivery of clinical research faster, easier, and more inclusive. , to accelerate the development of life-saving health – innovations ”.

The strategy also aims to develop and test new Covid-19 vaccines and treatments; support a faster approval process for UK research; enhance clinical research with more virtual and remote trials; and increase diversity and participation in trials.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: “Clinical research has been vital in our fight against Covid-19 and has saved thousands of lives. Working with the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland governments, our ambitious UK-wide vision of the future of clinical research is essential if we are to take advantage of this exciting and life-saving boost.

“We are making this vision a reality by continuing to work closely with our UK partners, the NHS, regulators, industry and the medical research industry. We will create a more innovative, resilient and patient-focused clinical research system.” .

Lord Bethell, Minister of Innovation, added: “This is the first step in a great ambitious vision. We will continue to build on these solid foundations to deliver a research ecosystem that positions the UK as a world leader in cutting-edge clinical research. With integrated research in the NHS, the UK will be a world leader in trials of new treatments and technologies.

The plan aims to promote “a patient-centered, innovative, data-driven clinical research environment.”

It comes when the government launched its data strategy project with the aim of capitalizing on the work done with health data during the pandemic.

According to the government, the draft strategy “Data that saves lives: reforming health and social care with data”, patients will have more control over their health data with easier access to test results; drug lists; procedures; and care plans for all parts of the health system through patient applications, such as the NHS application.

But privacy advocates and patient groups called it “fast work”, calling for protection from “patients with NHS ahead of” the demands of those interested in obtaining benefits ”.

They have asked for clarification on who will have access to the data and how it will be used.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock wrote an exclusive blog for Digital Health News, explaining his plans for data strategy in the healthcare and healthcare system. You can read the blog here.
