In a series of cases published online on June 7 a Pediatrics, the authors present seven cases of acute myocarditis or myopericarditis in healthy male adolescents within four days of receiving the second dose of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccination.
Mayme Marshall, MD, of the School of Medicine at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, and colleagues detail seven cases of acute myocarditis or myopericarditis in healthy male adolescents who present chest pain within four days of the second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.
According to the authors, around the presentation, five of the files patients he had a fever. In all seven cases, acute COVID-19 was ruled out by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction tests of nasopharyngeal samples. No patient met the criteria for multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children. Negative antibody tests for severe acute respiratory syndrome of coronavirus 2 were obtained for six patients, which did not indicate any previous infection. An elevation of troponin was observed in all patients; a late improvement of gadolinium characteristic of myocarditis was observed cardiac MRI image. Symptoms resolved quickly for all seven patients. Three were only treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and four received intravenous immunoglobulin and corticosteroids.
“While we expect more definitive data on the nature of the relationship between the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine and myocarditis, there are some concerns about this series of cases that could suggest a causal relationship and therefore justify additional analysis through established surveillance systems, ”write the authors of an accompanying editorial.
