Border controls, restricted entry, quarantine essentials to curb COVID-19 and future pandemics

Border controls, restricted entry and quarantine for incoming travelers are essential to stop not only COVID-19, but any future pandemic, in its own way, finds a review of the published evidence available on control early infection in the online journal BMJ Open.

Comprehensive case detection, repeated testing to rule out false results, applications and the use of GPS data to allow contact tracking and personal isolation, as well as financial support are also key elements in any policy to curb the spread of infection.

Although there are several elements of a finding, The tracking, isolation and support system (FTTIS) has long been a staple of public health, COVID-19 infection has some specific features, such as silent transmission, a strong age gradient in severity of the disease, in addition to other features that remain little known, the researchers say.

Inform future Strategy and improvement of the design and implementation of current systems, the researchers systematically reviewed international studies, published in English, that evaluated the follow-up of contacts, tests, self-isolation and quarantine on the management of COVID-19.

Some 118 studies were included in the review, covering the periods from May 2019 to May 2020, June 2020 and January 2021.

The results showed that the best strategies for achieving a successful FTTIS to quickly control COVID-19 (and other pandemics) include:

  • Border controls, restricted entry and quarantine of incoming travelers
  • Test those at highest risk, such as health care workers and home residents
  • Reuse an existing network of laboratories and create new test sites to meet demand. Grouped tests can be used to improve test efficiency; repeated tests to minimize falsely negative results
  • Use of smartphone applications and GPS data for and monitor compliance with self-insulation
  • Timely and appropriate information to reduce uncertainty and anxiety; to allow people to adhere to infection control regulations
  • Seamless integration of all components; linked health services data at the local, regional, and national levels through real-time data compartments and boards
  • Regular press conferences of the central outbreak control team to inform the public about the evolution of the pandemic, policy changes and to correct misinformation
  • Open and balanced debates on , such as privacy, protection of personal data and curb of personal freedoms for the public good
  • Short to medium term plans, with periodic reviews to respond quickly to emerging challenges

“Our findings may inform politics in future pandemics,” the researchers conclude. And “they can inform countries that are considering implementing these measures.”
