Artificial intelligence may be able to quantify the actual youth of facelift surgery


For most patients, the reasons for doing a facelift are simple: “turn back the clock” to get a younger, more attractive look. Even during the 2020 pandemic year, more than 234,000 patients underwent facelift surgery, according to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

When facial facelift surgery is considered, you may ask me, “How much younger will I look?” For plastic surgeons, this has been a difficult question to answer. Usually, the cosmetic results of the facelift have been judged on a case-by-case basis or with the use of subjective assessments.

Now research suggests a new objective approach to assessing the reduction in apparent age after facelift surgery: Networks (AI) trained to estimate age from facial photos. “Our study shows that currently available AI algorithms can recognize the success of facelift and even reduce perceived years of age,” says lead author James P. Bradley, MD, vice president of Surgery, Zucker School of Medicine in Hofstra / Northwell. The study used a type of AI algorithm called . “Through training on data sets containing millions of public images, these you can learn to discern facial features with an “experience” far superior to a typical person, ”explains Dr. Bradley.

Four publicly available neural networks were used to make objective age estimates of facial age for 50 patients who underwent a facelift. AI estimates were made using standardized photographs taken before and at least one year after facial facelift surgery. The results were compared with patients ’subjective assessments of their appearance, along with responses to a standard assessment assessed by the patient (FACE-Q questionnaire).

The patients were all women, with a mean age of 58.7 years. The artificial intelligence algorithms used in the study were 100% accurate in identifying the age of the patients, based on “previous” photographs.

In the “later” photos, neural networks recognized a 4.3-year-old age reduction after facelift surgery. This was substantially lower than the 6.7-year reduction, according to the patients themselves. “Patients may tend to overestimate their younger appearance after facial facelift surgery, perhaps reflecting their emotional and financial investment in the procedure,” says Dr.

In the FACE-Q questionnaire, patients were very satisfied with the results of facelift surgery: the mean scores (on a scale of 0 to 100) were 75 for facial appearance and more than 80 for the quality of life. Neural age reduction estimates were directly related to patient satisfaction. “The younger the AI ​​program perceives a patient’s age, the greater their satisfaction with the results of their facelift,” says Dr. Bradley.

Artificial intelligence algorithms can provide an objective and reliable estimate of the apparent reduction in later age. , suggest new findings. These age estimates also appear to provide an indicator of patient satisfaction scores, even if the reduction in years does not match the patient’s subjective assessment.
