The number of people hospitalized because of the coronavirus increased by 106 over the weekend in Arkansas, which leads the nation in cases of new viruses per capita.
The Department of Health said Monday that state virus hospitalizations increased to 787. Of those, 291 patients are in intensive care and 124 patients with ventilators.
State virus cases have increased in the last three days by 2,552 to 365,132 in total since the pandemic began. The state reported 15 new deaths. Recently, the department stopped reporting daily COVID-19 numbers over the weekends, publishing the figures on Monday.
Cases in Arkansas have increased in recent weeks due to the delta variant of the Arkansas virus and a low number of vaccinated people. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 35% of the state’s population is fully vaccinated.
Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson embarked on a statewide tour this month, where they held town halls to encourage people to get vaccinated.
Over the past two weeks, the average number of daily new cases has increased by 114%, according to figures compiled by researchers at Johns Hopkins University.
About 21% of the state’s 8,817 hospital beds and 5% of the 1,066 intensive surveillance single beds are currently available, the department said.
