Riverdale, 05/02/2021 / SubmitMyPR /

Riverdale, NJ – The 2020 wildfire season set records. More than 8.8 million acres of land were affected, which is two million acres more than the ten-year average, and almost double that in 2019. However, the effects of the season of forest fires extend far beyond the land affected by the actual fire. Last year smoke was transported from California wildfires across the country, partially covering the sun in New York, Boston and even Maine.

In a new video, Camfil air filtration experts explain the dangers associated with fire smoke and the solutions that can be implemented to mitigate these risks.

“I am often asked to recommend a solution to combat the smell of fire smoke; however, much more dangerous pollutants also need to be addressed, ”says Jennifer Webb, who is the segment manager for Camfil’s molecular filtration in the western U.S. and Mexico.

What will the 2021 forest fire season look like?

Most of California’s rain occurs between November and March, but this season has been the highest third driest on record, and the California Secretary of Agriculture has designated 50 counties as “major areas of natural disasters” due to ongoing droughts.

“After last year’s drought and worsened by a growing number of extreme heat waves, we are likely to see large, destructive forest fires here and in all western states and provinces,” Webb comments.

What are the effects of forest fire smoke?

In the Camfil video, Jennifer Webb shares her experience with last year’s fire smoke as a Northern California resident. “It’s an experience from another world,” he shares, “One day during gunpowder last September, I was working at my desk looking out the window. The day started a little hazy, but at two in the afternoon they went turn on the landscape lights “dusk till dawn” and it looked like someone had put a dark orange film on the window, but worse were the intense smells of smoke, burning eyes, and the stifling irritation of the throat as soon as I put my foot out. “

There are two categories of hazardous pollutants that make up fire smoke.

First, fine particles, or PM2.5 (particles 2.5 microns or less in diameter), make up about 90% of fire smoke. In addition to irritating the eyes and airways, PM2.5 can reduce lung function and aggravate respiratory conditions such as asthma and emphysema.

The other major concern is gaseous pollutants. In particular, ground-level ozone can cause a reduction in lung function, an exacerbation of asthma and emphysema, inflammation of the airways, chest pain, coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

Also, the file CDC cites evidence from multiple scientific publications showing that the symptoms and outcomes of COVID-19 infection can be exacerbated by exposure to fire smoke.

How to protect yourself from fire smoke

The best defense against the harmful effects of fire smoke is air filtration.

Camfil recommends capturing fine particles with a fibrous filter classified MERV 14Ao higher if it’s possible. One of the possible solutions achieved by this MERV-A level is that of Camfil Durafil ES2.

An activated carbon filter it is the best way to absorb gaseous pollutants, such as the smell of smoke and ozone, which are about 1000 times smaller than the smallest fine particles.

“When space is limited in an air treatment unit, a combination of particles and molecular filter, such as Camfil’s, are combined CityCarb I, is the best solution, “advises Webb,” To treat individual spaces, such as offices, classrooms and residences, I recommend a recirculating air purifier with HEPA and high-capacity molecular filter such as Camfil City M air purifier“.
