Felix Lee may be only 24 years old, but he already has a mission to democratize tutoring.

He is co-founder and CEO of ADPList, and aims to provide people around the world with an engaging and revolutionary way to access tutoring.

Launched last year, ADPList is a platform for finding, booking and meeting mentors from around the world, providing anyone with access to some of the best minds, starting with the product design and management community.

It is now available in more than 70 countries with 20,500 mentors and more than 2,500 mentors actively contributing to it. It manages 5,000 bookings a month and organically facilitates more than 252,000 minutes of mentoring sessions as of July 2021.

Behind this strong growth, ADPList announced today (August 17) that it has raised $ 1.3 million from Surge, a Sequoia Capital India rapid expansion program for startups in India and Southeast Asia.

From product design to the tech entrepreneur

Felix grew up in a humble family in Singapore, where “the idea of starting herself was deeply rooted” in his upbringing.

He founded his first startup, Packdat, when he was a student at the Singapore Polytechnic, and sold it to the Passpod, listed in Indonesia for an undisclosed sum last year.

Instead of going to college like most of his classmates, Felix took a solo adventure to Indonesia and the United States in search of inspiration. There he explored the world of technology beyond the familiarity of Singapore, before returning home to do military service.

Enrolled in a polytechnic engineering course, Felix felt that his drive toward creativity and creation was restricted by the components he used. He wanted to challenge the limits of possibility and found creative freedom in design. Product design soon became his creative outlet and “a space for problem solving”.

In 2019, Felix attended online after-school design courses. Eventually, “that passion became a call” for him.

He was inspired to create products with a purpose that “can make this world a little better for humanity.” Over time, however, he thinks ambition becomes “purposeful adventures.”

Unlike most, Felix began his career when he was still a student. It is a risky measure by Singapore standards, but it has been shown to carry rewards with risk and consistency.

Being early in my career taught me the value of a relentless mindset. The constant presentation of the day to day is what builds the character himself: it’s good to start early.

One of our mentors, Siu Rui (co-founder of Carousell), told us to do things that would not escalate. I went out and talked to all the users about what worked and what didn’t, and this review improved the product. It became something people needed. If I could finish things, I would do things that weren’t scaled up before.

The humble beginnings of ADPList as a Google spreadsheet

Felix and his co-founder James Baduor wanted to turn the exchange of knowledge into something scalable. The couple idealized to bring this knowledge to people around the world who otherwise “would never have had the opportunity.”

Felix identifies the disparities between the way knowledge is shared between different groups of people, based on “who can afford it or who you know.” Similarly, sharing knowledge with a larger community is traditionally done “through first connections, not far away”.

ADPList first started with tutoring in the design field because Felix and James were designers to begin with. As the company gains strength, they are now opening doors to mentoring for product managers and software developers.

The duo started ADPList last year in April 2020 at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, with just a Google spreadsheet. This open source spreadsheet was born out of the founders ’desire to help the many designers who found themselves unemployed in the pandemic.

They found that the spreadsheet tab that received the most clicks was the one focused on tutoring, which inspired them to integrate it into a platform, List of Amazing Design People – ADPList.

Everyone thought it was a crazy idea; no one thought it would work. “Why would anyone target a stranger in a completely different country?”

But our mentors have shown the world that people can, in fact, open their conversations to others. In January 2021, we officially launched our website and the global community met with it.

Get on board more than 2,500 successful mentors

The success of ADPList did not come easily.

“In the first two months, no one fully believed in the mission that came together to create access and equity for tutoring: we made phone calls to sponsor and collaborate and no one would give us meetings. It’s crazy.” , lamented Felix.

Over time, they worked tirelessly to break down more barriers, not only with global communities, but also with companies and sponsors.

ADPList now connects 20,500 mentors in more than 70 countries with more than 2,500 mentors actively collaborating with major global companies, including FAANG and other firms such as Spotify, Twitter, LinkedIn, Nike, Twitch and Coinbase.

ADPList welcomed their mentors on board with ease as many industry professionals really want to return to the community.

“Our platform allows them to do so flexibly and across borders,” Felix said, adding that mentors are often encouraged when they see the impact of their mentoring in a form of intangible accomplishments, such as when your tutoring gets a job, promotion, or improving the outcome of the job, among many others.

From the first moment I started mentoring with ADPList, I knew it was more than an act of “knowledge transmission”.

Having watched over 6,000 minutes in 10 time zones with over 100 mentors from over 15 different counties, I can tell you one thing for sure: each session is a unique exchange of our lives, our stories, and our dreams. There is no better feeling when Amazing Design People meets.

Felix also recounted his experience as a mentor to a young man settled in Nepal two weeks ago. He had shared with Felix that he had few resources to take advantage of, but he was happy to have ADPList as one of his learning spaces.

Which is even more inspiring that he actually continues to share the knowledge with the children of his village.

“At ADPList, when you mentor someone, mentor them more than an individual: you mentor their community, city and, hopefully, the country. The impact is priceless, ”said Fèlix.

“The best part of ADPList is touching someone’s life, no matter how short it is. To remind them that someone believes in them more than they could do and encourage them to dream bigger. That is a success for me. “

New directions and growth

Felix attributes the success of ADPList to his mentors and the wider ADPList community. Almost 90% of their bookings are cross-border.

This drives Felix and James ’vision of a world with accessibility to knowledge without location restrictions or affordability.

“The voice of all mentors is a unique community and we want to design a place for mentors to grow their network of mentors who continue to learn from them for years, in different formats, from individual sessions, groups, content and more.”

“In fact, we’re working to introduce more formats for mentors to have their impact.”

Although booking a mentor to ADPList is free at this time, a payment model will be introduced in the future, but tutoring will remain accessible to everyone.
