33 million uninsured people of all ages in 2019


In 2019, 33.0 million (10.2 percent) people of all ages had no insurance, according to a study published online June 29 in National health statistics reports, a publication of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Robin A. Cohen, Ph.D., of the National Center for Health Statistics in Hyattsville, Maryland, and colleagues used data from the 2019 National Health Interview Survey to estimate in general and by selected sociodemographic characteristics.

The researchers found that at the time of the interview, 33.0 million (10.2%) of all ages were uninsured in 2019, including 32.5 million (12.0%) of people under 65 . Overall, 3.7 million (5.1%) children and 28.8 million (14.5%) working-age adults (18 to 64) had no insurance. For those under 65, 64.3% were covered by private health insurance, including 56.5 and 6.5% with employment-based coverage and direct coverage, respectively. Two out of five children and one in five adults under the age of 65 were covered by public health coverage, primarily Medicaid and the Child Health Insurance Program. Variation was observed in the proportion of adults age 65 or older covered by private health insurance, Medicare Advantage, and traditional Medicare by age alone, , , and race and Hispanic origin.
